What are the methods of web designing?
There are two main and common methods for web designing: responsive and adaptive design methods. Then there is standalone mobile designs.
What is responsive design?
Responsive web design is the type of web design where the content moves according to the screen size. The responsive design is made specific to respond to the changes in the dimensions of the browser. When the browser width changes, the design elements adjust themselves to fit in the available space.
When you open a responsive site in the web browser, you can see the web design change as you change the size of the screen. When you open a responsive site in the mobile browser, the process is done automatically for you. The site access the dimensions of the screen before hand and presents a web page suitable for it.
It is a straightforward design and fluid in the sense that the users can access this kind of website on their smart devices with the same easiness they access it on their wide monitors. For the ideal functioning of a responsive site, there must be proper conceptualization of the site and an understanding of the needs and wants of the users of that site.
What is an adaptive design?
Adaptive web design is the type of web design where the content is created using the standard sizes of the screen as the frame of the layout to be created. This type of design is also called progressive enhancement of a website. The adaptive design has multiple layout sizes fixed according to the screen sizes unlike responsive design which alters according to the screen size.
When you open an adaptive design, it will detect the available space, and display a layout which mostly suits your screen size. Therefore, when you open a browser, a layout which matches the dimension of your desktop screen is displayed, and when you resize your screen, there will be no changes made to the layout.
The preset layout design in adaptive designs are done for six screen widths which are 320, 480, 760, 960, 1200, and 1600 pixels.
What is standalone mobile design?
Standalone mobile design is a web design which is created specifically for mobile devices. The mobile only websites have their URL prefix ‘m.’. Here, websites are made for mobile devices instead of creating a separate layout for the mobile. There was a time when this approach was applauded by many. Web designers use different elements and layouts which were dedicated to this format. Google also gave search engine rankings to these mobile only websites.
The challenges which were faced for this design that it required high maintenance as both the websites’ models need separate updates and developments. It was difficult to maintain homogeneity between both.
Since there came no solution to counter this challenge, the mobile only sites have fallen out with time.
What are the elements of web design?
Layout of the web design refers to how the materials of the page are displayed. The task of choosing a layout for the client’s website is a tedious task for the web designer. There are many things they should keep in mind while doing so. The layout should be simple, intuitive, and accessible for the users.
Web designers incorporate white spaces or negative spaces to bring in a desired effect on the readers. These blank spaces are also used to organize the elements of the site in order and design.
Web designers design specific layouts for desktop and mobile devices. The reason why much importance is given to creating special layout for mobile screen like desktop screen is because of the fact that much of the users access websites today using their smart devices. Nobody would want to see a website which does not adapt to their device. When doing this the designer should make sure that they are being consistent with the design on both the platforms as both of them belongs to on brand.
Images are used to bring certain meaning or context to the content given. Sometimes images alone can convey more than written content. Illustrations, graphics, photographs, and icons all belong to the category of images in web design. These are used to deliver additional information to the text given.
While choosing images for the web page, the designer should make sure that they select images that compliment each other and the brand they represent. This is done to create the desired effect they want to bring.
Visual hierarchy refers to the order in which the user will process the content of the webpage. The visual hierarchy is created by applying specific patterns which will then lead the eyes of the user in the order intended by the designer.
The normal patterns of visual hierarchy created are F patterns or Z patterns. Both these patterns emphasize the top horizontal section of a website. This is the section where the designers mostly place the brand name and logo, navigation box or search bar. These elements can increase the interaction and user engagements on that website.
Color scheme refers to the color patterns opted by the designer that will be used for all the web pages. The combination of colors that comprise the color schemes should resonate with the brand identity and brand values of the website.
While choosing a color scheme make sure there is only one dominant color, and the other colors should be added to complement this color. These colors will then form a color palette. A color palette can be monochromatic, where all the colors are shades of one color, or analogous, where colors are close to each other on the color wheel, or complimentary.
Typography refers to the style of font that is used. Typography should also be chosen to compliment and resonate with the industry and brand your website belongs to. Some web designers go for a combination of fonts and does not stop in one.
The font chosen should be easier to read and should not distract the reader from the content of the web page. While choosing a font, the designers should keep the target audience of the brand in their mind to opt for the ideal type of font. There are various fonts under serif and sans serif fonts. Designers can choose according to the brand they represent.
Readability is the virtue of being able to read a content effortlessly. The users should be able to see and read the contents of a web page easily. The time an average user spends on a website is less than 15 seconds and therefore, within this time you should be able to communicate your message to the audience or else the purpose of the web page will not be served.
The information on the web page should be easily accessible by the reader. This readability is attained by choosing appropriate size of text and pixel. The contrast between the text colors and background colors also have the power to alter the readability.
Navigation refers to the movement of the user on the website or web page. There are some tools that are provided in a website so that the user can easily go towards what they want from the website instead of getting lost. These tools are commonly called as navigational elements. The navigational elements can be seen in header, body, or footer of the website. It depends on the site’s layout and structure, where to place the navigational tools.
Placing this is an important task. It should be placed somewhere where the user can easily see them and access it. This could create user engagements which are beneficial for the website. They direct the users to the information or content they are looking for.
There are lots of navigation layouts for the designers to choose from.
Content refers to the entire information given on the website. It is an important element because it is due to this content that the visitors are coming to the website in first place. The content should be communicated clearly so as to grab the attention of the readers quickly. With strong content you will have the power to turn your visitor into a customer of yours.
For achieving this, the designer should use appropriate tone and style. The designer should also make sure to About Us page and Contact Us page on the website.
